Island
Ecosystem
Koh Rong
Samloem

Our island is a fragile ecosystem that needs to be protected from excessive development and the exploitation of both the land and the marine habitats

Any loss of wildlife can cause detrimental impacts to our beautiful paradise

The

Wonderful Wildlife Of Samloem

Project

was established to educate island visitors and residents how everything on the island is connected and the importance of the sustainable use of the island’s resource

Blue Carpenter Bee

Please help us to maintain our island’s healthy ecosystem by:

Always putting rubbish in the bin

Recycling island waste

Reducing the use of non-renewable resources such as plastics and Styrofoam containers

Not killing or removing any wildlife

Conserving the island’s water resources as they are limited especially during the hottest months

Long-Tailed Macaque
Variable Squirrel
Praying Mantis
Red-Lined Flabellina

Our beautiful paradise island is a product of the intricately balanced island ecosystems originating from the remnants of a now sunken volcano

Due to the mineral rich soil found on Koh Rong Samloem the island is able to support a vast range of species from the common Casuarina trees, which stabilize the soil and fix nutrients allowing other plants to grow, to more specialist species such as orchids which require specific conditions in which to grow

Casuarina Tree

This mass of floral diversity provides a broad range of ecological niches, where certain species exist because the conditions are suitable to support them, providing the habitat for animal species to establish and thrive

The island is comprised of many different habitats which supports many different species including

Rain forest – hugely biologically diverse and wildlife supporting habitat

Beaches – transition habitat between land and sea

Sand dunes – important for protecting coastline

Grassland – important for carbon storage and cycling

Mangroves – vital habitat for fisheries and birds

Estuaries – important for water filtration and habitat protection

Sea grass beds – important marine habitat for food and shelter which also filters toxins from the water

Coral reefs – Protects the coastline from waves whilst providing food and shelter for marine species

Coral Reef

We have many animal species on the island some of which are vital to the island ecosystem

The pollinator species including butterflies, bees and moths germinate plants to maintain the diversity of each habitat

Fruit and seed feeding birds and mammals

The decomposing species consisting of various ground dwelling insects beetles, bugs, worms but also bacteria and fungi

Population regulators that consume living organisms including insects, mammals, reptiles, birds and fish
